Is the season upon us already?

I don't know about you but I have already participated in one race this season, I am going to watch a pro race during the next week, then my next race is 4 weeks away, followed by my first road race of the year 5 weeks later.

This is the middle of winter right?

Maybe I shouldn't look so far down my calendar.

Going to California

Time for a road trip to spectate at the Tour of California. We're leaving early enough to take our time and make it to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday's stages.

The trip plans also include quality family time, a visit to the beach, plenty of In-n-Out burgers, and some bike riding.

The 2009 Frozen hog

...should be renamed the Muddy/slushy/actually wished it was frozen hog.

I may be quoted saying "this is stupid" which I said last week in Park City as well. I believe we spent 75% of our race pushing our bikes. I later found out from another participant that last year he achieved 2nd place by pushing his bike for nearly the complete race.

The more I get distanced from the event the more I think it was fun. Yeah it was muddy, slippery, wet, any snow was soft snow, I crashed a bunch of times, I couldn't get in to my pedals at all during the second lap, we walked a whole lot more than I care to walk, and it was stupid. But there definitely is a fun vibe at this event. I hope all mountain bike races have this vibe.

Average speed: 4.9 mph
Distance: 5 miles
Result: 8th in the 30-39 age division

15 miles of therapy

At approximately 16:00 I could not stand it any longer. Screw the job, screw the pollution, I'm going for a bike ride.

I drive home, get ready, and head out, leaving me approximately one hour to ride.

What a beautiful afternoon. I got 15 miles in doing my usual Layton Ridge course and it felt great. Aaaaaah, serenity now. I have officially been going nuts without the adrenaline, the heart rate pumping, the gliding, the crisp shifting, the hard effort, the speed, all the numbers on my bike computer, the whole damn thing. And I'm a winter sports person. I ...used...to be completely nuts waiting for my chances to alpine ski or skate or nordic ski or do something in the snow. Now I nordic ski nearly every weekend which is quite calming and serene as well as a decent workout, but sooo not the same.

P.S. Winter training has been valuable, from core strength training to quieting my movements on the trainer. It's gonna be a good year tater.
